Breathe in This Breath of Life

"Ahhh… breathe in," my soul whispers to my heart. "Do you feel that? That’s life, Ashley. This is what living feels like."

I look around and take in the scenery. There are hundreds of trees with bright yellow and orange colors. Some of the leaves have fallen to the ground, creating a crisp golden floor. My heart inhales as I look up to the bright blue sky. It is a gorgeous clear autumn day. I can feel the air pass through my body as it fills my soul. My mind travels through the previous three months and I realize God has finally shown me what it feels like to have peace.

I can feel the cool breeze on my face as the leaves begin to fall everywhere around me. As I watch the leaves cascade I begin to think of all the area’s of my life that seem to be falling apart. Nothing seems to make sense when I think of my circumstances. I can feel a gentle wind brush through my hair I think to myself, Now that you have found peace, do not expect these circumstances to miraculously get better. Your circumstances may, in fact, get worse. Remember, peace is being content in all circumstances.

I feel so content right now. I feel a strong, passionate, and deep love for God. I feel content and at peace with the world. Most of all, I feel a peace through these circumstances which–at times–are overwhelming. I feel like dancing, singing, rejoicing even in the midst of all my pain. But the question is… how long might this feeling last?

The truth of God rings through my thoughts, This feeling will not last long unless you realize that it is not simply a "feeling." Peace is more than a feeling; it is a way of life. It is something deep inside the core of you that transcends all understanding.

Jesus once said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27)." Also he said, "…in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 16:33)." What a truth to remember! My peace is found in Him. Circumstances will bring me pain and trouble, but take heart!—the Prince of Peace has overcome this world!

What a breath-taking truth this is. My heart is filled with contentment and peace. This peace that I have found does not come by pushing away my problems; it comes from acknowledging them and giving them to God. It comes by realizing that through this pain His glory will be brought to this world. This peace comes through Him and Him only. I cannot attain peace from the world. I cannot sustain peace through this world. Peace is found and constant in the One who overcomes everything in this world; Jesus Christ.

My heart feels alive again. I feel like I finally know what it means to live. To live in the Spirit. To live in peace and joy. Finally, I know what contentment in Him feels like. My heart is at peace and it is giving life to my soul.

Regardless of circumstances, I will rejoice.

Regardless of pain, I will carry on.

Regardless of trials, I will persevere.

Regardless of suffering, I will be filled with peace.

Peace in Him. Peace that transcends all understanding. Peace that overcomes this world and through every circumstance stands strong in the power of the Lord. How refreshing.

Mmm… breathe in this breath of life.

Proverbs 14:30 "A heart at peace gives life to the body."
